West Gate

In the first phase of this large-scale reconversion, the storage building on the street side was given a complete makeover, including a new outer shell, a transparent steel front structure and an elevation. The dreary volume of the past now houses a trendy coworking space of Fosbury & Sons and the Belgian branch of pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, among others. Futurn, the project developer behind West Gate, also has a branch office there.

Steel in various shapes and sizes

The fact that the renovated storage building has such a stylish look and feel is mainly due to the ingenious application of different types of steel. No fewer than three different corrugated sheets by Joris Ide were used in this project: type 18-76-988, type 25-115-1035 and type 46-150-900.

"Not only the aesthetic simplicity and sophistication, but also the speed of assembly and the budget-friendliness were decisive arguments in opting for steel," says Brecht Vanbaelen, project manager at construction company and steel builder Mathieu Gijbels.

"It is without doubt one of the most beautiful buildings that I have had the pleasure of realising in my ten-year career with Mathieu Gijbels.”
Brecht Vanbaelen, project leader
