What is an EPD?

An EPD is based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) of a product. This LCA evaluates the environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle of the product, from raw material extraction to the end of the product's life.

EPDs therefore provide information about the raw materials used in a product, the transport method from suppliers to the production site and from the production site to the construction site, the packaging used, the end of life of a product, the recycled content of the raw materials and packaging, etc.

The results of this study are presented in different impact categories across the various life cycle stages, such as “water use”, “acidification potential”, etc. The most well-known and most commonly used impact category is the “Global Warming Potential”.

Advantages of an EPD

An EPD provides extra credits in certification schemes and in the overall building scores for construction certificates such as BREEAM, LEED, EDGE, and also various national building certifications. Around 70% of international and European standards for “Green Building Certificates” award credits for using construction materials covered by an EPD.

In addition, EPDs ensure that, as a company, we comply in advance with the new European CPR regulation, as governments around the world are introducing stricter environmental laws, where EPDs represent a key compliance advantage.

As manufacturers, by creating detailed LCAs, we can also optimise the impact of our products by identifying inefficiencies in the production process and promoting innovation. Finally, publishing EPDs brings carbon transparency to the market for our products.

Our EPD portfolio

Our current EPD portfolio consists of EPDs published with various program operators.
Program operators such as IBU, the International EPD System, and EPDHub are well-known across Europe, and we have published EPDs through these platforms.

We also comply with country-specific publications, such as the French program operator INIES and, in the Netherlands, the Nationale Milieudatabase.

The product sheets on the NMD cannot be downloaded in PDF format, but can be found via the NMD viewer by searching for “Joris Ide”: Milieudatabase Milieuverklaringen.
