Contemporary passive housing in Rennes
Energy-efficient residential architecture
The Symbioz project in Rennes is a contemporary residential development designed by Nicolas + Le Hen Architectes. The project consists of 35 passive housing units, developed with a strong focus on energy efficiency, comfort and architectural quality. Designed according to passive building principles, the development prioritises energy performance and long-term building efficiency, reflecting the growing demand for high-performance residential solutions.
The architecture is defined by clear volumes and carefully composed façades, where balconies and terraces extend the living spaces outward and strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor environments. This approach creates bright and comfortable homes while contributing to a high-quality residential environment.
A dynamic façade composition
A key feature of the Symbioz project is the carefully designed façade, which combines different materials and colours to create depth, rhythm and architectural expression.
In passive and low-energy buildings, the building envelope plays a crucial role in overall performance. Well-designed façades help limit thermal bridges, improve airtightness and protect the insulation layer, contributing to the building’s long-term energy efficiency.
The building envelope alternates between textured and smooth surfaces, introducing subtle variations that emphasise the building’s geometry. This architectural approach allows the building to achieve a strong visual identity while remaining harmonious with its residential surroundings.
High-quality steel façade solutions supporting modern architecture
Product focus
To realise the architectural vision of the project, two complementary façade solutions from Joris Ide were used: JI Sonora and JI Grégale 300.
These metal façade systems combine architectural flexibility, lasting quality and precise finishing, making them well suited for contemporary residential projects.
Refined vertical façade rhythm
The JI Sonora façade profile in RAL 7006 (25µ) introduces an architectural rhythm to the building envelope that creates a structured and contemporary appearance. Designed as a ridged façade cladding profile with visible fixings, JI Sonora can be installed either vertically or horizontally, depending on the desired architectural effect.
The panels are mounted on a secondary support structure and installed with one overlapping wave, ensuring a precise and consistent façade finish. The warm grey tone provides depth and contrast, contributing to the building’s modern and balanced architectural appearance.
Texture and visual contrast
Complementing the ribbed profile of JI Sonora, JI Grégale 300 provides a flat façade siding system with concealed fixings, creating a clean and refined architectural finish. The system is installed from bottom to top on an adjustable support structure and can be used for both new construction and renovation projects.
The panels used in this project feature a RAL 9006 metallic finish with a durable 35µ coating, designed for exterior applications where higher corrosion and UV resistance are required. This lighter metallic tone introduces contrast to the façade, balancing the darker vertical cladding and adding visual depth to the overall architectural composition.
